The role of melatonin in the body
Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland, a pea-sized endocrine gland located in the brain. One of melatonin’s primary functions is to help regulate sleep by controlling the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, known as the circadian rhythm or 24-hour biological clock. The brain releases more melatonin toward the end of the day to prepare for sleep and decreases in the early morning as the sun rises.
